What political bloggers can teach you about your writing

If you read just a sampling of blog posts from political bloggers and the comments of their readers, you’ll notice two things:

1. There’s vehement disagreement over which candidate is best and why.

2. The writings are filled with great fervor and conviction.

Regardless of where you stand politically, be inspired by these bloggers to inject a little emotion, passion and personality into your own copy.

3 ways to improve your writing — instantly

Regardless of your job title, you probably have to write something every day, be it an email, memo or documentation.

Improve your writing instantly with my three top tips:

  1. Read the copy out loud to see how it will “sound” to the reader.
  2. Examine each word and decide if it you can delete it or if there’s a short, simple word that can be substituted. (One of my personal favorites is substituting the word “use” for “utilize.”)
  3. Vary the sentence length. Some should be short. Some long. Still other sentences should be longer, since they create a rhythm that’s more interesting to the reader.
