I consider it my job to help my clients understand their audience. I like to challenge them with thought provokers that I hope will forever change the way they communicate — or even think about communicating — with their audience.
Here’s the question I ask and the one I hope you’ll start asking yourself or your corporate writers:
“Is this what you want to say or is this what your audience wants to hear?”
Remember, it’s not their job to hear you, it’s your job to reach and connect with them.

Great point–It’s easy to keep these questions handy to help get to the root of your client’s messaging needs/demands.
This is a tough balancing point for some bloggers, who, like myself, write more for the sake of self-expression than any kind of monetary gain. But I think you do need to attempt to connect with an audience – even a small band of loyal readers – else you’re likely to burn out. If your posts never inspire interaction from your readers, what else is there to validate your efforts?
Thanks, Kristen. And, yes, Rob, blogging for self-expression is a completely different animal, though I like your insight into the fact that you still need to inspire an audience reaction even then.
